Anu was born in New Zealand and earned her medical degree at the University of Auckland School of Medicine. She worked with international nongovernmental organization programs for child health and disaster relief before coming to New York City in 2002, where she trained in pediatrics, global health and public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

She trained in tropical and travel medicine at Universidad Cayetano Heredia in Peru, worked with the NYC Department of Health on pediatric tuberculosis, and subsquently became the director of Global Health Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  

In 2017, Anu created Women Together Inc. The organization supports grassroots women’s groups in eastern Africa to travel, meet and exchange income-generating skills. In 2018, she became the director of the Office of Wellbeing and Resilience at The Icahn School of Medicine at Sinai.  

In 2019, she and her colleagues formed Equity Now At Mount Sinai to draw attention to discrimination in health care and to provide a platform for action.

In March 2020, in response to the COVID pandemic, Anu founded Covid Courage to address the shortage of PPE in NYC hospitals. Covid Courage has sourced, purchased, produced and distributed PPE to hard-hit hospitals and communities across NYC.
